Matthew Monk

Professor

Matthew Monk, an associate professor, has taught at RISD since 1993. In his Providence-based graphic design practice he produces books and catalogues for cultural and educational institutions. Clients include The National Gallery of Art, Yale University Press, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Metropolis Books, The RISD Museum, and Wellesley College. His work has earned numerous awards and has appeared in Print, Communication Arts, Graphis, ID, Metropolis, and AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers, among others.

Matthew holds an undergraduate degree in graphic design from North Carolina State University, and an MFA in graphic design from RISD. He has worked as a designer at studios in Charlotte NC, Washington DC and Boston.

In his personal work, Matthew explores systems, typography, and narrative through experimental collage and mixed media projects involving an expansive range of accretive and subtractive processes. His interest in broadening the language of graphic design leads him to draw from disciplines such as painting and sculpture, conceptual art, architecture, performing arts, literature, science, and philosophy. In his work and teaching he synthesizes a strong commitment to experimentation and exploration with deep respect for the history and traditions of art and design.
